Medical transcriptionists listen to dictated recordings made by physicians and other health care professionals and transcribe them into medical reports, correspondence, and other administrative material. They generally listen to recordings on a headset, using a foot pedal to pause the recording when necessary, and key the text into a personal computer or word processor, editing as necessary for grammar and clarity.

Every time a patient receives health care, a record is maintained of the observations, medical or surgical interventions, and treatment outcomes. This record includes information that the patient provides concerning his or her symptoms and medical history, the results of examinations, reports of x-rays and laboratory tests, diagnoses, and treatment plans. Medical records and health information technicians organize and evaluate these records for completeness and accuracy.

Medical Transcription
This course in medical transcription consists of 40 hours of authentic dictation consisting of letters, progress notes, pathology reports, history and physical reports, discharge summaries, consultations, and operative reports.  These work types are dictated by many various dialects covering all medical specialties.  In addition to hands-on transcribing, the student is also trained in voice recognition editing and goes through an instructor-guided externship.  The student is also instructed in industry-related equipment necessary for appropriate job performance, HIPAA regulations, employment opportunities, transcription resources, and the use of technology.

Medical Insurance Billing

This course involves learning elements and provisions of common medical insurance policies and their basic processes of handling claims. The student will also learn to define and describe features of CPT, HCPCS, ICD-9-CM and ADA coding systems.  In addition, the student will be able to apply, access, navigate, locate and print various medical billing systems. Also, the student will learn to add, save, access, edit and print patient accounts.

Medical Coding For The Physician Practice

This course involves learning the processes and guidelines of medical coding and how they are utilized to create billable claims. The student will learn and understand the coding systems for ICD-9-CM, CPT-4 and HCPCS.  These rules will be used to code office notes, operative notes and billing slips/superbills. The student will be able to apply this knowledge in a number of physician-based offices and facilities.

New Coding Professional
Hospital - Based Coding For new coding professionals. 

This is an extensive course designed to give the new coding professional the requisite skills required to enter the hospital-based coding profession and prepare the student to take the national certification examination administered by the appropriate professional organizations. Students will learn how to properly classify medical data from patient records, review patient records, and assign numeric codes for each diagnosis and procedure. Coding accuracy is highly important to healthcare organizations because of the impact on revenues and describing health outcomes.

Non-Medical Transcription is a program designed for those students who want to enter into the law enforcement, insurance, criminal justice and business industries as an at-home transcriptionist.

Courses include instruction in the proper use of equipment, as well as in terminology, formatting, grammar and punctuation, improper English, including slang and verbatim, and confidentiality.
